~SUMMER 2014~

More Visitors and More Donations

The Eldon Depot continues to welcome visitors this summer. We have had several scheduled tour groups visit as well as individual weekend visitors. We welcome several new donated displays, including 2 turn of the century glass battery chargers, a railroad employee locker and an antique telephone for the clerkís office. The completed walking-bike trail which connects the depot to the Des Moines River overlook has attracted daily walkers and features a beautiful view of the hills and river valley. The annual Gothic Dayís celebration brought many visitors to Eldon and the depot. The depotís train participated in the parade and also provided free transportation through the fairgrounds during the Wapello County Fair.

Continuing Improvements

Several improvements are currently in progress at the depot. A bathroom re-model is nearly completed. The engine mural is being repainted by artist Roger Miller. His original work was suffering weather damage. A new surface has been applied which will extend the life expectancy of the mural. A second mural is planned for the back side of the building where the loading dock was once located. It will simulate a working dock from past days. The crawl space under the building has received new foam insulation which will help keep our floors warm this winter and conserve valuable energy consumption.
