October Events - Hobo Stew Supper and Depot Bake Sale

The depot held the annual Hobo Stew Supper in October. It was well attended and we only had two bowls of stew left at the end of the evening. Once again, the weather was beautiful and we were able to enjoy both the depot as well as the outside grounds. It is always good to see friends and supporters of the depot. The Hobo Supper provides an excellent opportunity to get together and showcase our ever-expanding displays. Thank you to our members for providing such a delicious meal.

We also had our fall Depot Bake Sale later in the month. Many ladies in the community donated baked items in order to make the bake sale a success. We greatly appreciate their generosity.

Depot Improvements and New Displays

We continue to work on improvements to the depot and the displays. We will soon be adding additional signs depicting historical scenes from the KD railroad site and the roundhouse which was originally located in the green space area behind the depot. We hope to place the signs near the original locations to help visitors visualize the former era. We received from David Wright a large travel trunk which has been placed on the baggage cart in front of the depot.

The board continues to work on improvements to the facilities and displays. We have many ideas and a vision to insure that the history of the railroad and the impact it had on the lives of those living in Eldon will not be forgotten.

Generous Volunteers

We wish to thank our many volunteers. Gene Stacey has volunteered his time helping with the bathroom project and also made a new donation stand. His skills are greatly appreciated. David Wright remains a generous contributor.

Souvenir Items Available

We continue to have souvenir items which can be purchased at the depot. They include Rock Island logo hats and tee shirts and collector cups. We have a new collector cup which features a photograph taken by Al Seeger. It showcases our caboose on a foggy morning.

Winter Hours Resume

We are open Monday through Friday 7-9 AM. Individual and group tours can be scheduled by contacting manager, Fred Thomas. We also will be having a holiday open house in December.
